Olympic 2010 Wordmarks on My Red Mitten Shop
By Red Mitts of Red Mitten Shop Canada
In early December, after reading in the media that Canadians were not able to find any of the 2010 Olympic red mittens in stock to buy anywhere, I decided to design a website to help. The very much in demand Maple Leaf Red Mittens were sold out all over Canada and everyone still wanted to buy a pair. In response to this rather disappointing bit of news of the shortage, I decided to create a little hand knit red mitten website that would help them locate a pair of the red mitts in time for the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games held in Vancouver, B.C., Canada in February of 2010. I found a suitable, descriptive and available domain name for my website with the words olympic, red & mittens in the URL. I set about the business of website building, uploading photos of my red mittens, inserting an animated Canadian flags, writing pertinent content using my keywords a few times. The response was immediate; hundreds of visitors checked out the website each day and many of them found and bought themselves a pair of the fuzzy red hand warmers bu clicking on the listings of mitts for sale that are provided by an RSS feed from ebay onto my website. All was well until about 2 weeks ago when I received an email from the legal dept hired by Vanoc & the IOC to find and stop any website or business that is infringing on the trademark and wordmarks that are temporarily owned by them. They requested that I stop infringing on their copyrights immediately or legal action would be taken. I responded right away requesting that they clarify which photos and words were a problem, since I had not used the olympic rings or logos anywhere. I have yet to recieve a response. I have done countless searches on-line to find a list of all the words and phrases we here in Canada may not use. It's not really well communicated on the official 2010 Vancouver Olympic website; I had to compile my list from all over the blog-o-sphere. Here is a list of words, owned now by IOC and Vanoc, that I managed to find in my research: 'With glowing hearts we see thee rise' - This is really offensive to Canadians because it a lyric from our national anthem 'Oh Canada" which we all feel very patriotic about. WE MAY NOT USE THESE WORDS until 2011. Olympic (this is where I foolishly ran into trouble) Paralympic Winter Games Olympic and Paralympic logos and five interlocking rings. winter - our freezing cold season here in Canada gold, silver, bronze sponsor Vancouver, Whistler 2010 tenth medals games Olympic Paralympic Winter Games five interlocking rings See You in Vancouver See You in Whistler See You in Beijing Let the Dreams Begin Friend Sea To Sky - our famous winding highway that goes from Vancouver to Whistler, named by locals decades ago. Top 2010 '10 We're Next Road to Beijing Driven by Nature Road to Vancouver Road to Whistler Driven by Dreams Celebrate the Impossible Vancouver '10 Vancouver 2-10 Vancouver 2'10 Gold Medal Game Plan 2000 2002 '00 '02 Host Country Bid Booster Bid Champion Beijing and Beyond I'm Backing the Bid It's Our Time To Shine For The Fire Within It really is impressive that the IOC and Vanoc have managed to get all these words, especially - winter, games, sea to sky, friend and other words that are just part of Canadian' everyday discussion of weather, places, directions for getting there and the buddies you travel with. The fact that they have actually bullied their way into trademarking words from our national anthem is a testament to the out of control power wielded worldwide by this corporation. In the end, I have complied with the request to remove infringing photos & words from my website. I have rewritten my whole website, given it a new domain that does not contain any of their owned words or images. I'm not sure yet if this will be enough to satisfy the legal team. It is rather scary to think that Canadians are not going to be allowed to post their olympic photos of the games, their red mitten photos or video clips without getting into trouble. Apparently, even our facebook photos will be subject to this corporations legal right to ask anyone using any kind of image of the Olympics to remove it or face legal action. O CANADA!
Red Mitten Shop Canada is a new website to help Canadians and our visitors find and buy their very own pair of 2010 Olympic Red Mittens.
