Seniors playing Wii

In 2007 I started up my own video game website, thegameshop.mobi, please forgive the plug:), because my 3 teenagers are SO INTO IT. (Despite our best efforts to not allow it into our lives. While building the gameshop.mobi, I came to see just what the world of the gamer is or can be all about. It has become a social catalyst, though at first it seemed to encourage isolation. It is one of the main topics of conversation among our young people, an activity that keeps them off the streets looking for some excitement and now, the little gamers are connecting with their grandparents using the video gamer world.
School kids have recently raised funds to purchase a local seniors home several Nintendo Wii Sets. These great kids are now teaching their elders how to enjoy playing Wii. Golf, Bowling, Tennis & even Boxing are all very exciting to the often inactive senior set. Wii is mentally and physically stimulating. "It's just a whole bunch of fun for us seniors who are often bored in a care home setting." said one 90 year old lady. The people at home who are elderly or challenged can definitely benefit from playing Wii. Any amount of regular movement is an enormous benefit to a person who otherwise is fairly sedentary. I'm going to take our Wii over to my 87 year old parents place today and hook them up. They used to be very active, but in the last year, my Dad has become kind of wobbly in the legs and arms. He and My Mom are kind of nervous about going out and about now, since he often falls. I think the Wii may be the answer. Playing all their old favourite sports will bring some fun back into their world as well. I'll keep you posted on how it goes over in real time.

NEXT POST: Well, I have gotten as far as getting my parents to talk about trying out Wii. They were especially interested in the Wii Boxing game. They've been married for 66 years, maybe there's a bit of pent up irritation that could use an outlet. Sometimes, I can see that they are almost on the verge of popping each other one for real; they are both getting frustrated by each others' confusion. I'll post our first trial soon; I have to wait for teenage daughter to come with and help with the teaching part of the process. Wish Me Luck.
