How to Green Up Your Family & Friends By Taking Them Shopping. It has been decades since my partner and I went green. We have been trying for years to find a way to recruit others to the earths' cause ever since. Without a great deal of success. I had a big green breakthrough last month about still another tool to help people change the choices they make when buying products for their kids, home, pets and personal care. All of these products are now readily available in a green alternative. Grocery stores & pharmacies and health food stores now carry a wide variety of organic, toxin free, natural and eco-friendly household cleaners, biodegradable soaps, natural pet treats, organic baby food, organic everything really. The problem is that everyone is still shopping by habit; buying the same old Spic & Span type products that are just laden with toxic chemicals that WILL affect your whole familys health and well being. How to get people to change their habits is one of the biggest challenges to the green movement. So what is my big revelation? Take your Mom shopping!
Lately, I have been taking my elderly (and very un-green) Mom shopping because she is getting a bit wobbly on her feet at 86. We move very slowly through the store and I spend over an hour just going up & down the aisles while my Mom chooses her groceries. It came to me in the laundry product section as my Mom reached for the 10 millionth time for a bottle of fabric softener and laundry detergent. It was then that I saw my chance. "Look Ma!", I said as I grabbed a bottle of non detergent, non toxic, biodegradable laundry soap, the new organic laundry products are right here. Why not give them a try right now?"
She looked started and confused at first, but then, she took the green laundry products from my hands and put them in her buggy with an air of resignation. I've been going on about the environmental issues for 30 years and I guess nothing I ever said made a difference. I actually made this breakthrough by simply accompanying my Mom when she went shopping and taking the green items off the shelf myself. She would not reach for them herself for whatever stubborn reason there was, but when I held them in my hands for her to choose...VOILA! She is a big convert now and loves her new green stuff. Once we tried the green laundry soap & fabric softener, it was onward & upward to the bathroom & kitchen cleaners, bug spray, carpet cleaner, car wash and even organic groceries. I still can't quite believe that taking my Mom shopping has been the factor to convert her to a green conscious consumer, but what the hell, I'll take it. Go Figure.
