White People Celebrating Black President Barack Obama
By Diane Lennox of Artbeat Gallery Canada
Is it just for the people of African descent to celebrate the election yesterday of Barack Obama? Are white people experiencing the same depth of emotion at witnessing this extraordinary event? I am a middle aged Canadian woman whose skin is white, hair blonde & eyes light green. In 1963, as Martin Luther King gave his 'I Have a Dream" speech, I was only 8 years old, but I can still vividly recall how intensely I felt upon hearing his words of hope. During the 1960s, I had been watching the fight to free the black people of the US play itself out on TV and had been seriously devastated by the black & white news clips of innocent black Americans being beaten, cursed and even murdered by guns, clubs and the hanging rope. Even as a child I could clearly see how horribly horribly wrong this was and it shook me to sobbing inconsolable tears to witness the brutality of it. The deep shame of watching people who looked like me committing acts of such horrific violence against my fellow human beings would change me for life. On Nov 4, 2008, when I watched the announcement that Barack Obama had been elected to the white house; I, too, wept with joy, hope and pride at seeing my American neighbors take this huge step forward & away from their racist ways. As a white person, it has been my hope since childhood, to watch the process of racism being healed from our earth. As I grew up it became clear to me that this gross ignorance could not be changed by protest, violence, pleading or reason. Whenever I have come across racism in my day, I spoke out against it right then & there, but still I feel that, in all my years, I failed to make even a dent in the insidious ruin of bigotry that pervades this world. It has been decades Many many years have passed since I last felt any hope that the racial situation in the US would ever go away; not before it completely destroyed the American people. In 1980, I even went to Africa as a volunteer teacher; to try to do something to change the world. To my horror, the African people were filled with the wounds of racial ignorance that they had suffered for over a hundred years under British Colonialism. When they looked at me, white skin all a glow and long pale blonde hair, they felt fear and hatred. This was hard for me to bear in light of the fact that I absolutely loved the African people I met every day and had come along way to serve them. I lived there for a year until my poor heart could bear the racial hatred directed at me no longer. It really hurts to be judged unfairly by the color of your skin, no matter what the color. The strange thing was that I totally felt that their hatred for white people was justified. As a race, we had a lot of explaining to do. I went home with no sense of having accomplished anything except my own realization of just how much brutality my white ancestors had inflicted on the whole world, everywhere they went. After the election of Barack Obama for president, I felt hope just pour into my tired soul like a tsunami. Fear just did not amount to a force capable of stopping love. Love has won and the joy felt by people all over the world by the billions last night was strong and earth changing. I have never been so proud of our world. I have never been so hopefull. We must all now pray that Barack Obama will stay safe; that the world will be mindful of the danger that he may be in. In the past, we have all watched as our heroes are murdered by the ignorant, shot down in the name of hate. From John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King & Bobby Kennedy, to Bob Marley & John Lennon, we have all grieved the lost lives of these heros in our world. In fact, one of Bob Marleys'song lyrics went like this: "How long shall they kill our prophets, while we stand aside and look?" If anything happens to Barack Obama, it will mean the end of the United States of America forever. We simply must keep our vision strong, our prayers effective and our love intense. There are those factions in the world that would desire this destruction of America and I hope that all the Gods & angels & spirit powers in the universe will hear us pray for the protection of Barack Obama. It is up to us now, all the people of this world who now carry hope in their hearts must indeed pray, speak out and commit our heart & minds to the continued protection and healing of the American people. We must not let another chance be struck down before it reaches fruition. HOPE ON! |
