Who Buys Reborn Baby Dolls?
By Bebe Doll of The Reborn Doll Shop
Who buys a reborn doll? This a common question that I have been asked many times since I opened up my own life like baby doll store. It was my partner who first brought this type of doll to my attention after he heard a radio show on CBC. He said that reborn dolls are apparently going to be the next big thing. So I researched the topic and was immediately fascinated with the whole art of reborning baby dolls into realistic looking newborn baby dolls that you can't even believe are not real babies. Some of the deluxe reborn dolls even have breathing, sound and temperature mechanism to make them sound, feel and look just like real live babies. The reasons for buying a reborn doll are as complex and varied and the people that buy them range in age from children to senior citizens. Many reborn doll lovers are just kids; little girls and boys, who have well developed maternal and paternal personalities that just love to nurture others. The more realistic the doll that these kids love, the more well developed their learned connection between babies and the instinct to love and care for the helpless. Many cultures ancient and modern have provided doll toys for their children to encourage them to develop baby bonding skills. Some of the more primitive dolls are just a stick and head, with the eyes, nose & mouth crudely sketched on. These days, little kids are lucky to have the most realistic baby doll experience ever - just short of actually giving birth & raising a real one. Another category of reborn doll buyers are collectors. They buy OOAK, designer sculpted, artist reborned life like baby dolls as a business. I was surprised to learn that reborn dolls are being bought only so that a profit can be made by buying a unique Reborn Doll and then reselling when the dolls' value goes up. This increase in value can happen really fast, even in a matter of days. A one of a kind reborn doll will sell for between $1,000.00 and $4,000.00. Some collectors have over a thousand different dolls in their collections and there are many doll exhibits and doll websites where you can view gallery collections of just OOAK reborn dolls. The third kind of Reborn baby Doll Buyer are people who are trying to get over the loss of a baby, a stillborn baby or even an inability to have children. I have a particularly soft and tender spot in my heart for these people. They may need a life like baby doll to facilitae grieving and letting go or even getting out of denial that anything has happened to their lost baby. A huge huge void is left when we lose a child; especially if the death happened suddenly, or if it happened in a way that kept us from being with our child at the time. None of us who haven't been there can ever imagine how your reality goes so far out to some outer space when you lose your child. I have been told by grieving parents, that the hardest part is the physical missing of holding or seeing or hearing their child. If these grieving parents can be temporarily comforted by holding a baby doll in their arms then so be it. I do know this: it is an extraordinary life challenge just to keep on living each day after such a loss and any comfort or emotional healing that these beautiful little baby dolls can bring them is a gift. There is just so much grief and such an enormous chasm of emptiness; it can not be fixed or filled. But it can be helped and then healed over time. Love must be allowed to return to the heart, have an outlet for expression and a safe destination. If a realistic baby doll can offer that, then I am grateful to all the talented and professional reborn doll artists in the world that provide these little bundles of warmth, softness, charm & love. Although a reborn doll is just a vinyl, mohair and cloth object, I believe it can briefly come to the rescue of a desperately hurting parent who needs to just hang on to their own sanity. Some days are just SO BAD! There are those people who feel they have the right to comment nastily that reborn dolls are a bad thing or other negative value judgments on the people who buy them. I think maybe these naysayers have not given any thought to who they are ranting about. The people who make, buy and enjoy reborn baby dolls are certainly not hurting anyone or any thing. They have their lives and are trying to cope with what life has thrown at them. Why not respond to them with compassion? |
